The 2011 Reebok CrossFit games open qualifiers are in full swing!

I’ve been eagerly waiting for the qualifiers to begin, mainly to see what I would have been up against if I had chosen to compete. It took me numerous tries to get on the website last night and at one point it said the site was down for maintenance, which basically told me that their servers were overloaded. I gave up and figured I’d check it out in the morning. At 5 a.m. I was finally able to get the site to load, and it didn’t take long to figure out why the site may have been down. The information posted on the site said that they had close to 16,000 competitors registered, wow! Now you take that number and add at least twice as many random folks just trying to see what the buzz is about and you got yourself a overloaded server. I might be wrong, but maybe the shear number of visitors caught them off guard. Maybe they underestimated the popularity and growth of this great sport.

Obviously by the time I got on the site they had posted the first WOD and athletes had posted their times. After checking out the top scores and feeling clueless about their meaning or how they arrived at numbers like “306” I checked out the WOD instruction video, which told me two things. First, that the guy performing the WOD is well above my fitness level and two, I was not even close to being ready for any competition this year. Heck the guy in the video actually looked like he was doing the WOD in fast forward. I actually checked to see if the video was playing correctly because it looked way to fast, it wasn’t.

Even though I wish I could have competed this year I got a long way to go and admit it. If nothing else the games site gave me a free, eye-opening peek into what world-class athletes can do and where I stand in the bigger scheme of things. Along with the games, it also gives me a goal to shoot for. I wish all the athletes who compete the best of luck and hope to see you at the games.

Even though I’m sitting on the sidelines I can still be involved, maybe.

I’m thinking of doing some kind of promotion for the games but don’t know what exactly. It might be some kind of thing where if you see me at the games and bring me something you’ve printed from this site I’ll give you prize “X”. Anyway it’s just an idea that I’m toying with and we’ll see. I just need a few places to kick down some freebees and I’ll be in business.

See you in the hills
