I guess its time to get the flu shot because being sick keeps affecting my training!

Ok it’s going on three weeks and I still have a cold, or flu or whatever. It started out a couple weeks ago with a stomach flu that wound up putting me in the hospital with severe dehydration. While I was getting over that, I started catching a cold that is still kicking my butt. I have never been sick more times than during this past year. I can only blame one culprit, Montana, who for some reason is hardly affected by the illnesses she brings home. My theory is based on a simple fact, before Montana zero colds and flu’s and after, well you know.

My gut although smaller still persists on sticking around. Maybe its time to change some eating habits.

Well summertime is coming and I looked at my ever shrinking but still visible gut this morning and figured I best do something about it. If not just for the looks, but for my health as well. Over the last couple days I’ve received a couple e-mails blasting my last article. Basically they said I was picking on certain diets, specifically PALEO, which in my defense I never specifically named, only alluded to.

Anyway I stand by my earlier post because I don’t believe they can prove claims about early man and what he ate, but I have to give them credit, that their diet or whatever they call it must work. But I can’t say it’s unique since most diets seem to work as long as people stick with them. Diets are normally based on one fact; you use more than you take in and you lose. Sadly most people don’t stick with anything they try for long enough to see results. So is PALEO different? We’ll see.

I guess I am missing the boat and maybe I should get on the fad diet bandwagon.

With all the diet fads and tips out there these days I wonder if I’m missing the boat. I hear things like, gross I can’t believe your eating that, and ick do you know what they put in that. So I sat down the other day and imagined life without an occasional cheeseburger or French fry and it looked pretty boring.

Not to offend all you grass fed, health food, supplement taking, I gotta try this latest fad diet or I’ll die people. I am not knocking you or you’re ways, cause I have been there and done that, but in the long run the fads never last. I’ve tried it all and in the end I went back to eating regular stuff that normal everyday people eat. Maybe not in the same portions and maybe with a few changes here and there, but basically the same food. As time goes by I have noticed that each new fad diet comes with a larger and more restrictive set of requirements. Some are so restrictive its ridiculous to think that anyone but a few could sustain the diet for a short time let alone for life. For example what ever happened to the last fad diet Atkins? I really don’t hear about it much, not saying it doesn’t exist in some form or other, but it’s not the latest rage. I remember going to dinner one night with my brother, who was on the diet, and we ordered a pizza. When he got his slice, he pulled all the bad stuff like cheese, grease, pepperoni and sausage off the pizza and ate that! He discarded the crust, saying that the carbs were bad for you. Well I’m no nutritionist but that just sounded whacky. He sort of explained that too many carbs, when not used, could make you fat. My naïve thought was that he had just cut out the middleman and had ingested straight fat.

The relationship between CrossFit and Reebok a good or bad thing?

A couple days ago I clicked a link on my Facebook page, which led me to a video describing the new relationship between CrossFit and Reebok.  I immediately began scouring the web looking for reactions to the breaking news. It took only a few minutes for me to realize it was anything but fresh, damn! People have been posting about this since November, so much for my breaking news story. Any way I think this post is still relevant, even if it’s old news.

Is CrossFit doomed?

No it’s not doomed, not even close. The “Coach” as they call him has built a small empire and it is about to get even bigger. I don’t think he’s going to get bulldozed by Reebok like people think. In the video he states that he retains all control and to my amusement will still able to drop the “F” bomb, meaning CrossFit is still his. Some changes are coming, but I think the changes will benefit CrossFit as a whole. Some people in various forums have cried that this is the end of CrossFit, but I don’t think so. Here’s what I think.

CrossFit Affiliate team disqualified in banned substance review.

Picture of Drug Free Zone Sign on BrickWhen I saw a post on Facebook last night regarding this topic I was floored. Really? I thought someone felt the need to use illegal substances to win a CrossFit competition? I immediately posted a response that was poorly thought out. It said something like, “Way to go CrossFit for testing and boo to the cheaters”. I then read the article and had to back pedal a bit on my first comment, because after I read why the team was disqualified the waters seemed a little less clear.

The explanation given by the two athletes who tested positive for a banned substance was that it was due to an energy drink sold at GNC, which you can read here. When I read the post and comments, I had a mixed reaction. I came away with two thoughts about the matter.

Does weight play a factor in how well you perform a specific exercise – My thoughts.

I guess my recent comments about pull-ups being harder for people who are heavier hit a few nerves. I’ve received several e-mails, and at least one stern talking to about why I was wrong. But none of the people who complained were able to provide any facts contradicting me. Instead each stated in his or her own way that if you’re bigger you’re stronger and can lift more, can’t refute the genius there, but I’ll try. Remember I am no expert; I’m just giving my thoughts on the topic. I would love to hear your own thoughts as well.

BIG vs. Small, the size debate.

When searching the web for CrossFit related stuff, I have come across numerous discussions as to whether the CrossFit games are fair to all the competitors. Some say that the games are un-evenly matched because the smaller competitors can’t lift as much as the larger competitors and that the scoring system leans heavily toward the lifts. After reading numerous blog posts and forum entries on the topic, I am now more confused than ever.

Introducing G. Lobo and his warning to all the wanna be CrossFitters out there.

My name is G. Lobo. My friends call me Lobo, which stands for the wolf. I guess it’s because of my lean physique and my ability to act as a leader. I picked up the leader status when I started in the gym 15 years ago. I give out workout advice freely and no one has to ask, ever. Since my body speaks for itself, I’ve always felt that I have an obligation to help out the less informed.

I have been bothered lately and I’ll tell you why. Young kids with a lot of potential are straying from the tried and true and I think they need to be warned.

So this is for all the youngsters out there, the ones who want to get started in the “Lifestyle”. I’m not talking about any of those fancy new programs like “CrossFit”. I’m talking about good old-fashioned workin out. The kind I have been using for years.
That fancy stuff might be fine for some, but it just don’t work. Ya it might produce a awesome body, heck it might even give you a lot of strength and muscle but it ain’t for me. If you wanna sweat, if you wanna work your butt off, then I say go for it. As for me, I got my music on, my newspaper out and in a few minutes I’m getting me a steam bath. To those radicals I say.

The clash between bodybuilders and CrossFitters and my take on the whole mess.

You won’t have to search long online to find what people think about CrossFit both good and bad. The negative comments cover topics such as; it’s dangerous, not effective, they do the lifts wrong, they cheat doing pull-ups and the list goes on and on. Usually the critics that post these comments are “bodybuilders” who for whatever reasons feel the need to vent on a subject they know little or nothing about. The whole thing seems ridiculous to me and I thought I’d write why.

Comparing CrossFit to Bodybuilding is like comparing two completely different cars. Yes most cars have things in common, for example, all cars have tires, most use the same fuel and generally use the same roads but each looks different, they drive different and each is built to accomplish a specific task.

Part two of - The last few weeks just plain sucked and how my CrossFit training suffered because of them.

Some decisions seem fine at the time.

Instead of paying inflated prices at any one of the numerous hotels we usually stay at, I decided to stay at a hotel off the strip. The Silverton was my choice this time around, the prices were cheap and I figured it couldn’t be that bad. Usually we stay in hotels that have bowling alleys, or ones with shopping malls, basically with stuff we can do with Montana. My decision to stay at the Silverton was also based on the assumption that I could easily drive to any of the numerous hotels that had attractions for kids if we wanted to. But I figured that would not happen much since we planned to spend most of our time near the pool. It wasn’t until I arrived that I realized the weather was to cold and the pool was out, so if we wanted to do anything fun we’d have to drive.

The last few weeks just plain sucked and how my CrossFit training suffered because of them.

My nemesis month is actually part of two months.

The last few weeks have just plain sucked. In fact, I can say with certainty that if I could wipe the past few weeks from my memory I would. My nemesis month actually started two days before my birthday on October 26th and encroached well into November. We had planned on spending my birthday weekend in Las Vegas to relax. Room service, hanging by the pool and just walking around seemed like a good idea. We’d done the trip several times before and had a good time. Sadly Montana (My daughter) came down with something right before we left for Vegas. At the time she didn’t seem that bad, we thought she might be teething and she’d be over whatever she had by the next day, boy were we wrong.
